Sight-Reading w/ Mollie Stone

Sight-Reading Course w/ Mollie Stone

This course is geared toward singers who would like to improve their music literacy skills and strengthen their overall musicianship through intensive sight-singing practice. In this supportive environment, we will explore a wide range of musical concepts (including rhythm, meter, musical symbols, note-names, solfege, scales, intervals, and harmony), while also learning to recognize common pitfalls, tackle anxiety, and trust our instincts so that we may keep pushing forward after faltering. We will go beyond the confines of Western Classical traditions to explore other systems of musical notation, and learn how singing music from oral traditions can help us to become stronger musicians and sight-readers.

This class will be taught over Zoom. Participants will benefit most if they can print worksheets just before the start of each class so that they can take notes on each assignment as we sight-read. Most likely, there will be one or two sheets to print per class. If you have a system of opening a pdf of a screen and taking notes easily and quickly, you are free to do that as well. I recommend keeping all printed worksheets in a binder to track your progress.

Participants will also have access to an online site containing further resources, as well as the worksheets from each class meeting. Because it is important that this be a supportive environment where you feel safe to take risks, no one will ever be required to unmute and sight-read by themselves unless they wish to do so (we will only do this on certain days)

There will not be any required written homework assignments, however I may ask you to listen to certain pieces of music between classes. Most importantly, Sight-Reading Workshop is intended to make sight-reading FUN, and allow you to grow in the context of a supportive community.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
Sincerely,
Mollie Stone
